Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on the first walk?

As a new walker you should try to arrive at the walk start 20 minutes before start time and introduce yourself to the walk leader who will be wearing a yellow hi-vis tabard. You will be asked to complete a simple confidential Health Form which the leader will read and forward to the scheme co-ordinator for safe keeping in accordance with GDPR regulations. You will also need to sign the walk register which records the names of everyone participating in the walk.

What time should I arrive before walk start?

Registered walkers should endeavour to arrive at the start point at least 15 minutes before the start time to sign register and chat with your fellow walkers.

What should I wear?

In terms of footwear, we recommend sturdy, sensible flat shoes, trainers or walking boots depending on the weather conditions and terrain. Flip-flops or sandals are not recommended as there is a risk of stones, tree roots, twigs or even glass on paths. It is recommended that you take a waterproof coat with you even the summer. In the winter months it is a good idea to make sure you will be warm enough with base layers, gloves and maybe a hat. On longer walks up to 3 hours it would be useful to bring water, snacks and some money for refreshments at the end of the walk. Do not forget to take any medications with you in case needed whilst out and about.

Are walks weather permitting?

A trained walk leader will always be at present at the start of the walk and they will be in the best position to assess whether the walk proceeds as planned taking into account the prevailing weather conditions. Your personal safety and that of the group will always be of paramount importance in any decisions made by the leader.

Are people with mobility difficulties able to join walks with others who are more able?

We want Health Walks to be accessible to the widest possible audience so the answer is yes, depending on the walk you would like to take part in and the nature of the disability. We recommend that you initially contact the scheme co-ordinator on 07785 271807 to discuss the suitability of walks.

Can I bring children?

Yes, you can, but children under the age of 10 years must be accompanied by their parent, guardian or carer whilst children between 11-16 years old can be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 rears or older. It is important that you check the suitability of a particular walk with the scheme co-ordinator on 07785 271807 in advance of your participation. Certain walk routes are suitable for prams and push trollies, but it is advisable you check in advance of the walk you would like to go on.

Can dogs join a walk?

Well behaved dogs on a short lead allowed on selected walks which are signified by the dog symbol in the walk description shown in the published walk programme. Owners are responsible for their dog’s behaviour and the clearing of any fouling. Longer walks can involve walking through fields with stiles over which the owner will be responsible for lifting their dog over the structure. It is advisable to check with the walk leader in advance of your walk if the planned route crossing fields with cows, horses or sheep.

Are Volunteer Walk Leaders Insured?

Volunteer Walk Leaders are protected by the Group’s Public Liability Insurance Policy insuring them against any potential third-party claims. Accident/personal injury cover for walkers isn’t included in the Group Policy as you are taking part at your own risk. We strongly advise participants take out insurance against accident and personal injury.
